My best trip so far?

After a long while of not posting anything here, and even longer while of not going on a trip outside of the borders of my own country, I thought it would be interesting to look back on my past travels, and maybe try to “rank” them somehow. Now, I know I haven’t been to as many countries/cities around the world as some other people have, but I have seen a bit of this world anyway, so why not give it a go. 🙂 Truth to be told, I haven’t given myself the easiest of tasks with this post, just because any place I visited, I haven’t really had that many bad moments to be able to say “Yeah, I haven’t enjoyed this or that trip.” for example. Of course the trips I’ve been on have had some downsides to them, but that comes with travelling as such anyway. I won’t include all of my trips that I went on in my life in this post, I’ve decided to just pick the “top 5” and give you my views on why I ranked them as I did.

We will start with number 5 on my list (of course), and that is going to be my second trip to Berlin (the original post). It was the last trip that I went on, before the whole world stopped in 2020, and despite it coming in at number 5, I still enjoyed every minute of it. Before I decided on that destination, I was also looking at going to the USA, but thankfully I changed my mind, cause my departure date would’ve been right when the whole virus situation started, so it was much better that I was still able to go somewhere before all of that happened. This was a trip that I went on all by myself, it wasn’t the first one though, but like I said, it was still enjoyable. It is a different experience when you go on a trip by yourself, but I was lucky enough to meet some great people there! On the other hand though, being in Berlin just 6 months prior to that, I haven’t had a lot of ideas what to go see, even though it’s a big city, but everything worth seeing (for me), I’ve already seen during that first trip, so that is why this trip gets number 5 spot on my list. 🙂

Reichstag, Berlin

Next up, we will take a look at number 4 on my list. Although this one, and number 3 on the list, weren’t really as long as the other trips, but I still wanted to include them on the list because it was the first time I’ve visited those places. So, first up would be Venice, you can also read the original post here. I was debating whether to put this one as number 4 or 5, but in the end, because of some more enjoyable things (like the swimming pool – read the original post :D), this got a better “overall score”, than that trip to Berlin. I loved our time there, even though we visited the city of Venice just for a couple of hours, but the whole experience of the area was great! The fact that we only stayed there for a day, and haven’t really seen much, as there really isn’t much to be seen, put this in number 4 spot, but even if we stayed there for a bit longer, I don’t think it would get a better placement, so let’s continue with the list. 🙂

Venice, Italy

Like I mentioned before, this next trip has also been a short one, basically it was a 36-hour roadtrip I could say. 😀 And that trip was a visit to Paris! This came in as number 3 for a few reasons. It was a fun (but exhausting) trip, but on the other hand it probably should’ve been longer. Especially with how long of a drive we had to get there in the first place, and then back home of course. Since the trip was basically organized overnight, we just took the car, drove to Paris over night, spent the day there, and returned back home the same day. All the other details of the trip you can find by clicking on this link. The only downside to the trip was how exhausted I was after coming back home. That is why it got ahead of the other two that I’ve already talked about. Of course we weren’t able to see much of the city in the time that we spent there, so that’s why Paris is pretty high on my list of places to go to (again).

AccorHotels Arena, Paris

Now we are coming to the most interesting part of this post, only top 2 trips, in my opinion, left! Of course it was difficult to decide which one to put in as number 2 and which one went on top, but after some contemplation, I decided to put the trip to Scotland as number 2. I’ve written a few posts about the trip when I first started my blog, so I will only link my first post about it, and in case you’d be interested, feel free to look around and find the other posts as well. 🙂 That trip is the longest one I’m including in this post, but that fact alone didn’t help it take that top step. It was the second time I visited the UK, hopefully not the last time, and the whole trip itself was incredible! Would’ve definitely been THE best one, if it weren’t for the storm called “Beast from the East” and the snow that it brought to the country, making us spend some more time there, due to flights being cancelled and all that commotion. However, the things we’ve seen there, and just the experience itself, was, like I already said, incredible! I’ve been wanting to go back to Scotland ever since I got back home that first time in 2018, but haven’t had the chance to do so yet, so I’m hoping I could make it happen some time in the near future.

Oban, Scotland

Aaaand we made it to the final trip on my list! Or the top one, as you wish. 😀 Like I said, it was a difficult decision between this one and the Scotland trip, but in the end, the way the trip to Scotland ended, made it stay in second spot, while the first trip to Berlin, in 2019, made it all the way to the top! Although, this trip hasn’t been stress- or worry free either, but comparing that to what happened in Scotland, it was a lot easier to get through all the troubles. I’ve also written a number of posts about the trip itself, beginning with the one about staying in Venice that I mentioned a few rows higher, but the first post that presents our stay in Berlin can be found here. You might be asking why this trip made it all the way to the top, as the Scotland trip was longer and we’ve been able to experience a lot more, but like I said, this “review” wasn’t based on the duration, but rather on how a certain trip made me feel as I look back on where I’ve been. And this Berlin trip was definitely the best in that regard! It had a special meaning to my dad, and since I organized it as his birthday present, it was also a great thing to know that it was an amazing experience for him and my mum, as well, despite the troubles we had with the flight in the end, having to spend a night at Venice airport.

Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin

As you can see, we started this post with a trip to Berlin, and we finished it with a trip to Berlin, what a difference 6 months can make when going on a trip to the same city. True, that the circumstances of both of those trips were completely different, but still. I know that if I went there again, after more than 2 years, I would enjoy it a lot once again, just like I hope I will once I get the chance to go back to Scotland and Paris again.

And finally, to really conclude the post, I’ve set myself a goal, back in 2018, every year to go someplace I haven’t been before, but unfortunately, we know what happened and that has kept me from sticking to my goal. Hopefully soon, once some things in my life sort themselves out, there will be a lot more time, and of course money, left to spend on travelling again! 🙂
